LG G3′s 5.5-inch Quad HD IPS LCD Goes Into Mass Production

LG Display announced today that its 5.5-inch Quad HD (QHD) AH-IPS LCD panel for smartphones is going into mass production. The panel was certified as a QHD display by Norway-based international testing and certification organization, NEMKO and it takes smartphone displays to a brave new era beyond full HD.

The new display comes with an eye-popping resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels, which is half the number of pixels seen on a 4K TV.  LG Display claims that the panel has four times the image resolution of HD panels (or720p) and 1.8 times higher resolution than a Full HD panel. It also meets the 100 percent RGB colour reproduction standard.

The panel is incredibly slim, and comes with 1.15mm bezel and 1.2mm thickness. The display is highly speculated to be used in the upcoming LG G3, which will be the first mainstream phone to have such a high-res display. That amounts to a pixel density of around 534 PPI.

According to DisplaySearch, LTPS-based smartphone displays such as the one announced by LG will see growth this year, expected to hit 780 million units by this year and 940 million units by next year. LTPS panels will be likely employed only in high-end models, which need the power-saving and the space-saving design that’s a hallmark of this panel.
